Telangana Police

The Telangana State Police Department is the primary law enforcement agency responsible for maintaining law and order in the state of Telangana, India. Its jurisdiction covers all 33 revenue districts within the state. Established following the formation of Telangana, the police force emerged from the former Andhra Pradesh Police. The Director General of Police, Ravi Gupta, leads the department, which is centrally located in Hyderabad, Telangana.

State Police Headquarters

The Police Directorate, situated within the DGP headquarters in Hyderabad, serves as the operational base for the Director General of Police (DGP). The DGP holds the esteemed position of being the head of the department and is supported by a cadre of senior officers, ranging from Additional DG and IG of Police to Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG). The AIG holds a rank and status equivalent to that of a Superintendent of Police.

Districts

Every police district is aligned either with a single revenue district or encompasses multiple revenue districts. The leadership of each district is entrusted to a District Superintendent of Police, often referred to as the Superintendent of Police. Within each district, there are multiple Sub-Divisions, along with several Circles and police stations, contributing to the structured organization of law enforcement efforts.

Sub divisions

A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), who is either a directly recruited officer or promoted from lower ranks within the Telangana Police Service, or an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) from the Indian Police Service, leads each Sub-Division. The officer in charge of a Sub-Division is commonly referred to as the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO).

Circles

In the organizational structure, a Circle consists of multiple police stations. The leadership of a police circle is held by the Circle Inspector of Police (CI), who is an inspector of police.

Stations

A police station, the fundamental unit of policing, is overseen by an inspector, holding an upper subordinate rank. The inspector in charge is responsible for the prevention and detection of crime, maintaining public order, enforcing general laws, and carrying out protection duties. Additionally, the police station plays a crucial role in making security arrangements for constitutional authorities, government officials, representatives in various legislative bodies, local self-governments, public figures, and others.

Commissionerate

A Police Commissionerate functions as a law enforcement entity, primarily catering to the urban areas within the state. The Commissionerate is led by a Commissioner of Police. Notable examples include the Hyderabad City Police, Cyberabad Metropolitan Police, and Warangal Police Commissionerate, serving the cities of Hyderabad and Warangal, respectively.

The Government of Telangana has taken measures to establish new commissionerates in Rachakonda, Karimnagar, Khammam, Nizamabad, Ramagundam, and Siddipet. This initiative is outlined in an ordinance issued by the government to enhance law enforcement capabilities in these areas.

Telangana State Police Recruitment Board

The Telangana State Level Police Recruitment Board (TSLPRB) plays a crucial role in the recruitment process for the Telangana State Police Department. Periodically, TSLPRB issues recruitment notifications and conducts a series of assessments, including written examinations, physical tests, medical examinations, and interviews. These comprehensive evaluations are designed to select the most qualified candidates for various positions within the department. Currently, the department boasts an active personnel strength of approximately 50,000 individuals serving across the state.
